Don\u2019t be alarmed if your teeth feel a little loose along the way because it’s normal. Wiggling adult teeth can be alarming, but it’s a sign your treatment is working, and here’s why.<\/p>\n

Why Are My Teeth Loose?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As your teeth begin to move from continual pressure, they will feel loose because the periodontal ligaments are being stretched. Believe it or not, the roots of your teeth are not fused with your jawbone. Instead, they rest in pockets of periodontal tissues. The soft tissues hold your teeth in place and also protect your roots from bacteria. The tissue creates pain signals to alert you if you\u2019re biting something too hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pressure from braces will elongate the ligaments, tissues, and fibers supporting your teeth. This gives them a little wiggle room, which may cause it to feel like your teeth are floating. They may feel loose for 2-3 days after having your wires adjusted or when switching to new aligners. You will get used to the feeling with time. Eating soft foods can reduce unusual sensations to prevent pain. If your teeth are tender, take an over-the-counter pain reliever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will My Teeth Tighten Back Up?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Loose teeth won’t last forever. Your teeth will tighten after your braces are removed, but your orthodontic treatment isn\u2019t over yet. Your tissues and bones must adapt to the new positions of your teeth. Until they solidify in place, you\u2019re at risk of your teeth moving back into their previous positions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wearing your retainer as instructed by your dentist will allow your periodontal ligaments and bones to heal around your teeth. While this occurs, resist the urge to wiggle your teeth and eat soft foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest assured, it’s a temporary issue that will be resolved once you finish your orthodontic journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
